Coast Live Oak

The majestic Coast Live Oak Tree (Quercus agrifolia), a true California Native Tree, is emblematic of the state’s coastal regions. This large, slow-growing evergreen can reach heights of up to 60 feet and features a sprawling canopy that provides generous shade. Best admired in its natural state, it often has low branching or a multi-trunk structure, complemented by its wind-sculpted trunk.

Adapted to hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, the Coast Live Oak showcases dark green, leathery leaves with spiny-toothed margins that curl slightly under. In spring, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers bloom, followed by slender, medium-brown acorns that ripen in the fall. The smooth gray bark of younger trees matures to a deeply fissured texture.

Commonly known as California Live Oak, this beautiful tree thrives in woodland settings, especially when paired with other California native plants. It attracts birds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it a great addition for wildlife enthusiasts.

Natural Form: The natural form of a tree refers to its typical growth habit and structure when left unpruned and allowed to grow freely. For the Coast Live Oak, this means a broad, open crown with low, spreading branches and a multi-trunk structure.
